Mac has worked in theatre, film, audio and radio. In the 1960s and 1970s he trained on the job in schools theatre and rep before illness forced him to take what became a very long break. Returning to the profession in the 2000s, he trained on a RADA Summer School and extensively at The Actors Centre. These days he plays mostly old, sometimes senile characters alongside a nice line in “bad Santa’s”. Having had a part-Yorkshire upbringing he enjoys working with accents and ha also worked in West Country and East Midlands among others. His one (shared) award is from the Austin Short Film Festival for Santa in David Campion’s The Naughty List which won Best Ensemble Cast. His favourite review is from The Stage for Pay as You Go where Catherine Usher wrote that “Richard Aloi as Simon…and Mac Elsey, as the insightful homeless man John, are the standout performances and show what a talented actor can do with limited material”. His most cherished compliment from a fellow performer is this from the American Jana Hereira: …when you get into character, it’s like turning on a lightbulb, very inspiring”.
